Description
Rare 12th Century medieval figure of St John, copper alloy, solid cast, engraved and gilded: finished "in the round" pinned from below, figure circa 1180 of St John mourning the crucifixion. The young apostle is shown in the traditional pose of a mourner, head on hand, his book supported with a broad swathe of drapery held across his left arm, the hair in soft waves and cut short into a close cap, traces of gliding present. The figure 8.5cms tall, mounted on an acrylic stand. This bronze was said to have been found at Totternhoe Castle, Bedfordshire.
