We are absolutely delighted to present The Simonini Collection – The Final Collection of Period Oak, the last sale from the collection, offering 92 lots of medieval sculpture, Tudor and Stuart furniture, early metalwork and textiles.
Medieval and Renaissance carving forms the heart of the sale. Highlights include a French Romanesque sculpture of Christ as the Good Shepherd, circa 1250, an early 14th century polychromed Sedes Sapientiae and a pair of Anglo-Norman oak zoomorphic column supports.
There is also an East Anglian oak roof angel and a pair of matching angel corbels. Further devotional carvings include figures of St Michael slaying the dragon, St Peter, St Paul and Christ seated on the Cold Stone, alongside misericords and a Norman limestone sculpture of Mary and St John. The stonework section includes an English limestone gargoyle and a Pictish tribal marker from the 3rd or 4th century AD.
The furniture runs from the Tudor period into the 18th century. Early pieces include a Henry VIII aumbry, Tudor chests including a marriage chest, an Elizabethan draw-leaf table from Cranbourne Hall in Windsor Forest, and an Elizabeth I three-tier court cupboard. The Stuart furniture includes carved and dated wainscot chairs, a pair of Charles II commemorative panel-back armchairs named and dated 1678, joint stools and a Charles II serving dresser. The country pieces include primitive stick-back chairs and a Welsh fireside chair.
The sale also features a pair of limestone lions from the portcullis gate at Appleby Castle and a 17th century brass lantern clock by Jonas Barber. You’ll also find Nuremberg brass, pewter including a charger by John Howard, early lighting, tapestries and crewel work. The works on paper and canvas include a painting attributed to Domenichino and a copy of John Speed’s Historie of Great Britaine.
