Top Lots from our latest Military Sale 24 Apr 2018 News

Another weekend has passed and we’ve had another successful Sale, this time is was the turn of our Military, Coins, Scientific & Maritime Sale in our Bishop & Miller auction room in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Here’s a sneak peak into the top lots from this Sale…

The highest-selling lot of the Auction was lot number 520; a Victorian Tranter’s patent double trigger pistol which sold for £3,600. This was sold to a keen collector and I know it will make a fine addition to their existing collection. This set were in great condition and encased in mahogany complete with a James Dixon & Sons powder flask and oil bottle, cleaning rod, cap tin, grease tin, stripping spanner and screwdriver. In my experience, I find that individuals who collect every type of gun are rare. The history of firearms is fascinating and is constantly evolving. Most collectors will tend to specialise in some way, perhaps tending towards weapons of a certain period or by a particular maker, or group of makers. Different types of gun were created for different uses including sport, for military use or for self-defence, and so this offers modern day collectors a real breadth of material.

Next on my top lots from our  Military, Coins, Scientific & Maritime Sale was Lot 366, a 19th Century microscope which that sold for £1,100. This included original lenses and slides and was a really nice lot which was in good condition.  The microscope is an early French example and with many parts to the piece still present, which is unusual.

As if often the case in this industry, the provenance over the substance of an item prevailed in our auction room. We were thrilled to have Lot number 375, which was of Captain James Cook interest and sold for £340. It was a slip of hand written paper with a piece of linen enclosed, the note stating of “A piece of linen bought from Georguis Island by Captain Cook and given to EKD(?) by Mrs Richardson.” This was a really exciting piece to have in the Sale and sold to a London based collector and will make an intriguing addition to any collection.

Finally, as ever we are calling out to new and existing clients that if you think you may have some items that you would like to sell at auction then please do come along to one of our many valuation days across the region, or give the office a call to arrange a home visit for a no-obligation estimated valuation.
