Bishop & Miller’s Specialist Auction offers Finest Collections 21 Oct 2019 Auctions News

Bishop & Miller’s recent Fine Art, Oak & Treen specialist  Auction impressed global bidders and collectors with its spectacular selection of items. One key highlight includes Lot 296, an interesting piece attributed to John Arnesby Brown (1866-1955) “The Beach”, which is a signed oil on canvas and sold to a collector for £10,080.

Oliver Miller, managing director, said: “The special Arnesby Brown painting is a painting which was exhibited by Arnesby Brown, R.A. at the Royal Academy Exhibition 1932. The painting was sold  together with a charming letter from John Arnesby Brown to the Royal Academy of Arts dated 1935 stating: “Dear Madam: I have the pleasure to include 2 tickets for the private view I have on May 3 to preview the study of ‘The Beech’, One of my best. I have to be in the Gallery during the morning…Yours Truly Arnesby Brown.” This delightful detail to the item was of great interest to many bidders who all agreed that it was one of his best works! In the end the painting was successfully bought by a keen collector.”

Other top lots featured in this specialist Fine Art Auction were lot 567, a stunning George I black japanned and gilt heightened bureau bookcase. With beautiful details in the bevelled mirror doors revealing a partially red-japanned interior with an arrangement of shelves and black japanned shaped drawers. Another oil painting, lot 285, is a popular oil painting by the renowned Edward William Cook (1811-1880), called, “Evening in November on the Lagune of Venice, Churches of San Clemente & Redintone, Eliganean Hill in the distance, E.W Cooke A.R.A 1859,” sold for  £2,760 to a collector.
