Fine Art & Antiques Auction Highlights 24 Jun 2019 News

Bishop & Miller, the international auction house based in Suffolk, recently held its specialist Fine Art & Antique Sale which excited collectors near and far with its extensive array of works of art, sculptures, glass, rugs, porcelain and much more. The specialist Sale took place in Bishop & Miller’s new auction room which is an exciting expansion to the Salerooms in Stowmarket due to rapid business growth. Lot 264 stole the show in the Fine Art & Antiques Auction with an impressive bid of £6,240 (all prices are inc Buyer’s Premium) from an avid collector based in Norfolk for the highly desirable large Royal Worcester porcelain vase by Charles Baldwin (circa 1903).

The vase was an exceptional example of this famous pottery which is still producing pieces today. The exceedingly rare William & Mary period late 17th Century pair of tortoiseshell and silver mounted English tea canisters (Lot 100) sold for £1,200. This type of item is rarely seen in auction and they were in exceptional condition. The canisters came from a Suffolk vendor who is the widow of the collector who purchased them many years ago. A Continental plated table centrepiece of a single-masted ship with a pocket watch in the clock sold to a bidder for £1,200. Silver pieces such as these are growing in demand amongst collectors and dealers and this was reflected in the strong hammer price. Lot 374, a William Linton oil canvas, ‘Hall I’Th’ Wood, Near Bolton’, sold for a £1,080. Linton (1791–1876)was a British landscape artist who was compared to his contemporary J.M.W Turner and whose works of art have continued to be admired and collected by art dealers and specialist collectors.

Oliver Miller, Bishop & Miller’s Managing Director, says: “Our Fine Art & Antiques Sales was a fantastic Sale to launch our brand new auction room which is an exciting addition to our Salerooms. The Auction attracted the attention of serious collectors and bidders and the results did not disappoint with some enticing bidding battles. The variety of interesting antiques and works of art makes this Sale really special.” Bishop & Miller’s next specialist Sale is the Fine Jewellery & Watches Auction which takes place on Saturday 20th July 2019.
