Record Breaking WWII Beret Sells for over £20,000 at Suffolk Auction 30 Apr 2019 News

A very rare World War II Special Air Service Regiment  sand coloured beret has fetched £21,700 in Bishop & Miller’s Military & Medals Auction which took place at the weekend (Saturday 27thApril) at its Stowmarket Salerooms, breaking previous records. This high-selling lot which was sold to a collector based in Switzerland was amongst a number of other sought-after items included in Bishop & Miller’s specialist Military & Medals Auction. Other top selling lots included (Lot 336) a collectible Siebe Gorman & Co divers knife which sold for £2,300.

The impressive Norfolk Regiment D.C.M. M.M. Mon’s Trio First World War Medal Group sold for £2,400 to a UK -based expert medal collector. The specialist Sale also included Lot 163 which was a recently uncovered large archive from a well-known pilot called Flight Lieutenant J.H. Liversidge D.F.C. A.F.C. Royal Air Force, who was also Pilot to the Royal Family. The medal collection included the pilot’s Distinguished Flying Cross (1958) and a number of unpublished photographs of the pilot with members of the Royal family, including the Queen’s Mother.

This interesting lot sold for £5,200. Oliver Miller, managing director of Bishop & Miller Auctioneers, says: “We had an exciting few days of auctions and our customers had certainly done their homework on many of our collectibles with some exceeding estimates.

The rare World War II beret was certainly our star lot, world record breaker nonetheless, and we had a number of competitive bids before the auction opened so we knew it was one to watch. Militaria collectibles, especially rare militaria clothing items like this beret, are in high demand at the moment so it’s a fantastic time to sell if you have any items you wish to auction.

Bishop & Miller also held its specialist Coins, Cigarette Cards, Postcards & Stamps Auction on Friday 26th April at its Stowmarket Salerooms which also had a number of notable lots, including the Edward III Noble (Lot 7) which sold for £2,750 to a buyer in the UK.

The Victoria Australian Half Sovereign (1862) (Lot 101) fetched £5,300 to a successful bidder and The Royal Mint Queens Diamond Jubilee UK Gold Five Ounce Coin collection (Lot 564) fetched £5,300. Oliver Miller continues: “Our specialist Sales continue to grow as we attract attention from expert collectors around the world.
