Auctioneer’s Highlights ahead of Fine Art & Antiques Sale 14 Jun 2019 News

Bishop & Miller, the international auction house based in Suffolk, will be holding its specialist Fine Art & Antiques Auction on Saturday 22nd June 2019 from 10am at its Stowmarket Salerooms. The Auction which includes an array of collectible items will be selling the desirable Large Royal Worcester porcelain vase by Charles Baldwin (circa 1903), which has an estimate of £3,000-£5,000.

Other highlights to look out for in this specialist Auction include a fine example of a Nathaniel Mills Victorian silver “Castle Top” card case (Birmingham 1837). Originally this piece would have been sold to tourists at the time. On auction day this is expected to sell for around £800-£1,200. Mills, was one of the most prolific Birmingham box makers at the time and he contributed to popularisation of the so-called “castle-top” silver vinaigrettes and visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks which were sold as souvenirs.

Another top lot to watch out for is a Victor Rousseau (1865-1964) bronze and ivory figure, which was created in the early 20th century, depicting a Cornish wrecker and the figure is signed “Rousseau” on the base. Rousseau was a highly-regarded Belgian sculpture and when he won Prix Godecharle, arts competition in 1890 this gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, where it is believed he had the inspiration to produce this figure in Cornwall. The figure has an estimate of £600-£900.

Oliver Miller, Bishop & Miller’s Managing Director, says: “This is the second of our Bishop & Miller Fine Art & Antiques Auctions of the year, and the variety of collectibles with intriguing provenance and history we are selling is notable and really interesting. The team and I were thrilled to come across the Royal Worcester porcelain vase which is a stunning example of this famous pottery. Royal Worcester still continues to produce great quality wares and is synonomous with high end porcelain pieces with collectors around the world.”
