We are delighted to present our next travel & Exploration auction, featuring 199 lots that encompass tribal art, maritime antiques, scientific instruments, maps, antiquarian books and Grand Tour pieces.
Tribal art highlights include a Dogon Sirige plank mask, a Kuba Bwoom helmet mask, a Mende Bundu standing figure and an Asmat war shield from Papua New Guinea, alongside Australian Aboriginal material. The maritime section features ships’ compasses, binnacles, telegraphs and wheels, a US Navy diving helmet, a Heath & Co. Hezzanith sextant and a Chance Brothers brass lighthouse oil lamp.
Scientific instruments include barometers and barographs by Negretti & Zambra and Elliott Brothers, microscopes, telescopes and a Curta Type II calculator. Maps include works by Speed, Morden, Mercator and Jansson, while the books feature first editions by Nansen, Stanley and Darwin alongside a signed Stephen Hawking. The sale opens with ancient artefacts, from a Minoan pottery head circa 1700 BC to Roman glass and Greek pieces.
