Fine Art & Antiques Sale – What to look out for! 2 Jul 2019 News

Bishop & Miller, the international auction house based in Suffolk, will be holding its specialist Fine Art & Antique Sale on Saturday 9th February 2019 from 10am at its Stowmarket Salerooms, which promises to be full of over 700 lots, with some highly collectable pieces to look out for.

This specialist Auction includes highlights such the rare and very interesting Lot 618 which is a 19th Century embroidered
Sampler from the “Cheltenham Female Orphan Asylum.” The Sampler is expected to fetch over £2,000 and was a hidden treasure discovered in a house clearance. The Cheltenham Female Orphan Asylum (known as Cheltenham School of Industry until 1823) was significant as it was founded in 1806 by Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, who contributed financially to the institution with other members of the Royal family.

Other stand out lots in Bishop & Miller’s Fine Art & Antique Sale includes Lot 120; a George III commemorative silver vinaigrette (Birmingham 1805) with an engraved with a portrait of Nelson, inscribed ‘England Expects Every Man Will Do His Duty’. This expected to sell for around £1,000-£2,000.

Another top lot to watch out for is an oak encased Canteen set (lot 80) with an estimate of £1,500-£2,000, has an intriguing provenance – this piece is ideal for those interested in Aviation memorabilia and history. The Canteen of M.H. Wilkens & Sohne silver table cutlery, was formerly the property of James Michael Christoper Fitzmaurice DFC (1898-1965) – an Irish aviation pioneer and member of the crew of the “Bremen” which made the first successful trans-Atlantic flight from East to West on the 12th-13th April 1928 landing on an ice-covered reservoir at Greenly Island Canada.

Oliver Miller, Bishop & Miller’s Managing Director, says: “Our Bishop & Miller Fine Art & Antiques Sale is promises a host of delights for our historians and this upcoming Sale does not disappoint. We were intrigued when the Sampler came in to the auction house – it’s a really interesting piece and has gained a lot of attention from specialist collectors and dealers already. The provenance of the Canteen (Lot 80) really caught my attention – items rich in Aviation history always tend to well under the gavel too!”

Bishop & Miller’s next specialist Sale is the Decorative Art & Design Sale taking place on Saturday 23rd March 2019.
