Hammer Price of £122,000 for Asian Art Auction 22 Oct 2020 News
Bishop & Miller held an extremely successful Asian Art auction this week, achieving outstanding prices on a number of its lots, surpassing any expectations from the team.
An auction with 310 lots and big interest, the team knew there might be a few sleepers, however we were pleasantly surprised at just how much they sold for!
Lot 208 and 209 were popular with both telephone bidders and through the internet bidding. Lot 208 was a Peking glass vase, with scrolling leaf design and seven character marks to the base had a very modest £80-£120 estimate and lot 209 was a Chinese Peking glass pot with three ribbed bands and a scrolling foliate body and also had seven character marks to the base was estimated at a modest £100-£150. It was soon realised from the internet charging away that they were going to be very sought after. Gazumping anything that was left as a commission bid, the internet and the phones started the bidding war, increasing and lot 208 took a hammer price of £15,000 (incl. buyers premium) and lot 209 took a hammer price of £27,600 (incl. buyers premium).
These were not the only lots that excelled in this popular auction for the Suffolk auctioneers, we also saw Chinese gilt lacquered wood figure of Buddha, Qing dynasty which was a hammer price of £12,600 (incl. buyers premium), a Chinese porcelain pot and cover in turquoise and pink enamel with dragons to the panels and six character marks to the base, sold for £1,700 and lot 257 a Chinese double gourd vase in blue and white with figures seated playing games with further figures bringing a vase and wood took a hammer price of £4,800 (incl. buyers premium).
Oliver Miller said “we knew it was going to be our best Asian Art auction of the year so far, just by the sheer level of interest we were receiving in the lead up to the auction day itself. He went onto say: “we had an inkling that a couple of lots were going to go way above and beyond our estimates as we had a number of phone lines on them and I have never seen the office have such a high pile of condition reports for extra detailed images!”
