Suffragette Jewellery Adds Colour to Auction 7 Nov 2018 News

Bishop & Miller, the independent international auction house based in Suffolk, is proud to be selling three unique lots which pay homage to the centenary celebrations of the Suffragette movement, in its Fine Jewellery & Watches Auction which takes place on Saturday 21st July at its Stowmarket sale room.

The three lots include an early 20th Century brooch which containing the Suffragette colours with a central violet stone with a pearl and zircon fan surround (lot 385); an Edwardian amethyst and enamel brooch, again in the Suffragette colours (lot 386), with a central round faceted amethyst with white and green enamel edge; and an early 20th Century necklace, the glass stones in purple, white and green to a chain (lot 387).

Oliver Miller, managing director and auctioneer at Bishop & Miller, says: “We’re thrilled to have this pieces in our auction, and the timing is perfect as 2018 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which first gave women the right to vote. I am confident these beautiful and historical pieces of jewellery will gain the attention they deserve on auction day.

Oliver continues: “Suffragette jewellery is believed to have been manufactured to signify support for the cause through the use of relevant colours – green, white and violet. Purple represented dignity, white purity and green, hope. A popular myth that I quite like as well is that colours green, white and violet to spell GWV as an acronym for “Give Women Votes.”

Other stand out lots from this auction also include Lot 628 which is a rare Omega military watch, a highly-collectible Faberge pendant (Lot 318 ) and a stunning Cartier diamond ring (lot 250), amongst many others.
