Bishop & Miller held its first two day auction of the year on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th February 2020. This two day auction was all about Silver and Objects of Vertu and Fine Art & Antiques, with three days of viewing prior to the auction there was lots of interest for both auctions.
Friday saw the silver and objects of vertu auction, where there was over 270 lots featured. The buzz in the saleroom was felt as the room crowded with potential bidders. within this auction there was a number of lots that the auctioneer knew ‘were ones to watch’. Including in this was lot 203 a George III silver cow creamer. This beautiful piece, made in London 1784 by the maker Henry Chawner made an impressive £1,500 (incl. buyers premium). It was a fine example that featured a hinged cover with cast fly, loop form tail / handle.
Oliver Miller, Managing Director said of the piece: “the workmanship in this piece was really exquisite, beautifully crafted. It featured as part of a small collection and it was a real pleasure to auction such a rare item. There was plenty of interest leading up to auction day so we knew it would be one to watch.”
Day two of this busy auction was for the Fine Art & Antique items. Featured in this auction was lot 357 an outstanding John Alexander Harrington Bird (1846-1936) oil on canvas of two English pointer hunting dogs. This magnificent artwork reached an hammer price of £2,900 (incl. buyers premium). Auctioneer Russell Cole who took the paintings section of the auction said: “there was plenty of interest both online and in the room for this John Alexander Harrington Bird painting, there was strong bidding both online and in the room for this piece and it finally went to a successful bidder online, it is an outstanding piece of artwork to auction.”
Another successful lot of this auction was lot 483, a fine 19th Century Jerusalem olivewood pedestal desk. The rectangular top desk with moulded edge and three inlaid panels was a stunning example of the craftsmanship on a wonderful piece of furniture and reached a very impressive £3,200 (incl. buyers premium).
